Flat Twists #2- Week 2

I’ve realized in the last week that I need to develop a repertoire of hair styles that will prevent me from becoming bored with my hair and at the same time allow me to protect it for the foreseeable future. One of the ladies on the Long Hair Community made the point that it takes about 3 years to go from shoulder length hair to waist length with the average 0.5 inches per month. I did some measurements on myself and found that she was absolutely right. Shoulder to waist is 15” for me. That’s 30 months not counting trims. Round it up and it’ll be 2014 sometime before I hit that milestone.
I don’t want to focus on how long that will take.
The other issue is that my hair has a massive amount of shrinkage. I’m talkin’ at least 60%. It will take me all of those 3 years for my hair to even reach shoulder length in its natural state. That can be pretty discouraging.
To take my mind off of the passage of time, I’m going to focus instead on styling. From August 2011 to August 2012 I will be challenging myself to keep my hair in protective styles. I’ve even made a playlist on YouTube with inspiration videos. Many of these ladies have hair that is longer than mine, but I’m going to be adapting their styles for my own hair and posting here.
